How to prepare for a job interview

After weeks of applying endlessly for jobs, you’ve finally bagged that all important job interview. Immediately, the worry kicks in. How do you make sure you clinch the job and stand out from the rest? Don’t panic! We’ve compiled 5 top tips on how to nail that job interview and get you on the path to success.

RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH

Prior to the interview, find out all the information you can about the company and the role itself. Demonstrating that you’ve taken the time to research the company shows your enthusiasm to work for that specific employer and will help you stand apart from the crowd. Researching the company also gives you an insight into their future goals, and being able to discuss this with your interviewer will make you seem like a long-term investment. Take a look at the company financials, culture and competitors to get a good grasp on who they are.

KNOW YOUR ROLE

Take the time to read through the job description and learn what it entails to ensure you can hit all the points they’ll be looking for. It’s important to understand the role so you can explain why the employer should choose you over the other candidates. Reviewing the job description will allow you to be sure you can align your competencies with the skills required for that particular job role. If you can find out who you will be interviewed by, a quick look on their LinkedIn page may help you familiarise yourself and calm your nerves.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

The best way to prepare is to ensure you have all of your bases covered. Have a look at some common interview questions and make sure to prepare some questions for the interviewer at the end. Some common interview questions include:

  •     Why do you want this job?
  •     What are your strengths and weaknesses?
  •     Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?

Having some answers prepared for these common questions will prevent you from being caught off guard. Try asking friends and family to conduct a mock interview to help you identify areas which may need work. Clarify your selling points and make sure you demonstrate these in your answers.

MAKE A GOOD IMPRESSION

The last thing anybody wants before an interview is to feel tired, flat and generally not looking their best. Make sure to avoid alcohol the night before and get yourself a good night’s sleep in order to feel your best. Feeling rested will help you deal with any unexpected situations and keep those yawns away! Prepare a suitable outfit ahead of time to avoid a frantic wardrobe search for that clean tie and get it ready and laid out for the morning of the interview. Planning your outfit allows you to focus on the more important things before your interview. If your interview is in person, ensure you give a firm handshake and make eye contact with the employer.

STAY CALM

This one may seem obvious (and easier said than done) but it really helps! Remember your skills and that the interviewer is on your side. They’re looking for you to identify the qualities they believe you have and to get to know you as a person. Make sure to let your personality shine through and let them see who you are, both professionally and personally.
